Open Society Archives

The Open Society Archives is an archives and a center for research and education. Its collections and activities relate to the period after the Second World War, in particular the Cold War, the history of the formerly communist countries, human rights, and war crimes. The audiovisual collection includes footage and oral histories relating to the 1956 Hungarian revolution, monitoring of Iraqi and Kurdish television, materials relating to the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, and selected footage from WITNESS.

In 2004, Columbia University was selected to administer the Archive of Human Rights Watch, the largest US-based human rights organization. This collection will soon be joined by Archives of other leading human rights organizations, including Amnesty International USA, Human Rights First, and Physicians for Human Rights.

Information, news and analysis about the trial of Slobodan Milosevic at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), including up-to-date video recordings, with audio in English, for the proceedings, ( http://hague.bard.edu/video.html ). A physical archive of broadcast-quality digital video (dvcam) is being stored at Bard and will be made permanently available to researchers.

The Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders (MEA) is named after Martin Ennals, a fiercely devoted human rights defender. The Award is granted annually by a Jury of 10 international leading human rights organisations to an individual who is at risk, in recognition of his or her commitment in defence of human rights. The main purpose of the award lies in its PROTECTION. This is mostly achieved through media attention particularly in their country of origin of the laureate. The Martin Ennals Foundation’s archive contains videos, DVDs, press releases and other key documents related to human rights defenders around the world since 1993. The latest available material is a DVD in Arabic, English, French and German containing a 20’ summary of the annual ceremony of the Martin Ennals Award. The scenes selected focus on the 2005 MEA laureate, Aktham Naisse from Syria, showing his courageous work for human rights and democracy despite imprisonment, torture and harassment. The DVD also features the handing of the award by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Highlights of the ceremony were broadcast by television networks such as Euronews on 12 October 2005, while the Laureate gave many interviews to Arabic and other radio and television channels.
Human Rights Video Project

The Human Rights Video Project is a national library project created to increase public awareness of human rights issues through the medium of documentary films. The core of the program is a collection of 12 documentary films selected by a panel of human rights professionals, librarians and filmmakers. The project also encourages collaborations between public libraries and human rights advocacy organizations to present film screenings and discussion programs.

The AMIA site has some good resources on video care and preservation. In the past membership base has been drawn more from North America and the UK, but is increasingly international in scope. AMIA-L is a very active and useful listserv for anyone working with moving image materials.
International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA)

IASA was founded in 1969 to foster co-operation among archives which preserve sound and moving image collections, and draws members from around the world. The web site is accessible in English, French, German and Spanish.
Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP)

IMAP is a nonprofit service, education, and advocacy organization committed to the preservation of non-commercial electronic media. A very good site for all kinds of information pertaining to AV archiving. Has some concise info on formats, preservation and care. IMAP offers a low-cost cataloging template for non-profit media organizations.
