One of the most significant cultural collections of 2-dimensional art (prints, drawings and paintings) in the world made its relatively silent debut online recently. The British Museum has spent more than 15 years gearing up for this moment.

In my opinion this is the equivalent of the commencement of NYPL or the Library of Congress online. Seriously, this is a vast treasure trove and once you've spent any time there you'll never bother returning to poor old BibliOdyssey.

The
advanced search page is the best place to start (and bookmark) [there appears to be no real home page as such]. The size of the database is enormous. There are more than 13,000 satirical prints for instance. A free text search on 'London' produces a similar number. There are over one thousand prints by Albrecht Dürer. 'Ornament' returns more than three thousand images. Although the image sizes vary, most are at least close to screen size and there is no watermarking.

Beethoven Haus has no right or claim to any sort of copyright in Beethoven's manuscripts. Such claims are perhaps the most egregious examples of copyfraud around. Beethoven is clearly public domain and the only thing they have a legitimate claim to are the actual manuscripts themselves - as physical property. Moreover, if Beethoven Haus is supported with public funds of any sort, the notion of making a profit for scans or images made of such manuscript material violates the whole purpose of funding such institutions publicly - namely to preserve the manuscripts and make access possible to as wide an audience possible.

While there are certainly legitimate issues regarding preservation and digitization of such treasures, as well as the considerable expense involved in such projects (planetary scanners, etc.), the notion that libraries or archives have copyright interest in works that are clearly public domain is one that must be fought. It's basically a back-door attempt at asserting intellectual property rights upon the public domain by limiting access to those with deep pockets, or membership in a secret club. Ownership of a physical object in which a work is embodied (like a manuscript) is distinct from copyright ownership. This is a concept found in most copyright laws around the world.

Here's a glass of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon to PLoS ONE, Sereno et al and their decision to reveal Nigersaurus taqueti in an open access journal. I don't work as a professional scientist, but I'm a scientifically literate cheerleader from the sidelines (and I'm not the only one), and it's fantastic for me to be able to read this stuff: some of it is above my pay grade, but with a bit of reading around I can understand it all, and even without understanding every word I can relish the work. The more science is freely available the more interested minds might be able understand what science does and what science means.

Snapshot and case studies of current usage of Creative Commons (and other open content) licences by cultural heritage organisations in the UK

Jordan Hatcher, formerly a Research Associate at the AHRC Research Centre for Studies in Intellectual Property and Technology Law, undertook this study into how open content licences are used by heritage organisations in the UK. The study began in June 2007 and the final report was published in November 2007.

Starting September 10, 2007, NYPL is offering access via CATNYP to the digital copies of its collections scanned by Google. You may search for an item in the CATNYP catalog and if a digital copy is available, you may link to the copy that is part of Google Book Search. Scans of books will be made available first; periodicals and journals scanned by Google will be linked in CATNYP records in a few months. It is NYPL's intention to eventually provide direct access to copies of the digital files we receive from Google. For instructions on easy ways to find NYPL's Google Books in CATNYP, see our FAQ with hints on searching. To access a searchable list of all NYPL's Google Books in CATNYP please click here

Remarks:

NYPL has links not only the PD books but also to books which snippet view. It is not marked if a book can be viewed as full text.

Example for a record with Google link:
http://catnyp.nypl.org/record=b8623342

Unfortunately the Google books are presented in a frame. Therefore one cannot see the Google ID. It is not possible to circumvent the Google post-1864 DRM for Non-US users by using CATNYP.

Mark Twain Project Online applies innovative technology to more than four decades' worth of archival research by expert editors at the Mark Twain Project. It offers unfettered, intuitive access to reliable texts, accurate and exhaustive notes, and the most recently discovered letters and documents.

Its ultimate purpose is to produce a digital critical edition, fully annotated, of everything Mark Twain wrote. MTPO is a collaboration between the Mark Twain Papers and Project of The Bancroft Library, the California Digital Library, and the University of California Press.

Yesterday's flurry of messages resulted in the following being sent to me by a fellow subscriber. they have given me permission to repost here.

One, Brian to do the unsubscribing, six to ask why they are being
unsubscribed from the list, three to ask to what list they were
subscribed, three to quote a previous message from the list
administrator explaining what was happening, two more to hit reply and
copy all the messages in one and say "I got one of those messages,
too!," three more to explain from which list everyone was being
unsubscribed...

I've lost track, but what are the other 1584 subscribers doing?

Archivists, at least those servicing research rooms, spend a considerable portion of their careers working with genealogical researchers. Often archivists complaint about being inundated with genealogists when they hope to work with serious scholars, whining that often ignores the importance genealogy provides in our society as a legitimate pastime and quest for personal meaning and identity. Eric Enrenreich, in his The Nazi Ancestral Proof: Genealogy, Racial Science, and the Final Solution (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2007), provides a glimpse into this relationship between archivist and genealogy, although his focus is not on this relationship but on an explanation for why the German public seemed to accept the Nazi cause for the eradication of what was perceived to be an inferior portion of the population, when there was a legitimate reason for complaint.
