"Archivists hope historical records of internal conflicts over borders, cattle, grazing land will help resolve modern-day violence of same type."

"The Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM) at George Mason University is pleased to announce the release of its newest open source tool, Scripto, which opens up the possibilities of community transcription for digital humanities projects in universities, libraries, archives, and museums. "The 2012 election is still months away, and President Barack Obama could have another four years in the White House. But competition for which state can properly lay claim to Obama’s post-presidential legacy is already underway.

While Chicago, where the 44th president launched his political career, seems like a natural spot for an eventual presidential library, Hawaii is waging an underdog campaign to ultimately bring the president’s records to the Aloha State. ....

I think, Hawaii would be the better place to work and research. ;-)

I suggest that it is unlikely that publishers will continue to produce printed encyclopaedias even given the possibility of digital-related funding opportunities. Not only because they become out of date and are (in print-on-paper versions) difficult and expensive to update but because of the difficulties of providing reasonable remuneration for contributors to 'locked-down' copyrighted tomes. Open Educational Resources could be much enhanced by a Creative Commons/Wikipedia approach.

Peter Suber: The OA Journal of Computational Geometry released its financial statements for 2010, 2011, and 2012 (YTD), "to help others understand...the real cost of running an open access journal."

JoCG pays $10/year, for its domain name, and nothing else for anything.

Not all OA journals run on a shoestring this thin, but here's one that does and that can prove it

For some others, see the March 2010 article in which Brian Edgar and John Willinsky report that 29% of 998 journals using Open Journal Systems claimed zero expenses, 20% claimed expenses between $1-$1,000, and 31% claimed expenses between $1,001-$10k. 44% operated on zero revenue, 16% on revenue between $1-$1,000, and 24% on revenue between $1,001-$10k. (See Table 15.)

Mollie Lynch of Clarkston, Michigan, is a retired librarian who decided to assist people wishing to find genealogy books. She knew that thousands of American biographies, genealogies and history books have been digitized and made available on the Internet, usually free of charge. However, there was no single resource of "what is available and where." Mollie decided to create that resource.

Mollie's web site, GenealogyBookLinks.com, provides links to freely available digital books, focusing on American biographies, genealogies, and history books. The site now contains more than 30,000 links from more than 35 sources (only the top sources are listed on the site). New books are being added to the list daily. The current focus is on surnames, directories, vital records, and identifying smaller sites with local area-specific books.

The site is US-centric (no marking where US-Proxy is needed) and German readers will smile when reading in the source list "Guttenberg Project".

"Seven institutions managing Dutch heritage - International Institute of Social History, EYE Film Institute Netherlands, Theater Institute Netherlands, Museum for Communication, Dutch Archives for Graphic Designers (NAGO), Dutch Poster Museum Hoorn and the Advertising Arsenal (ReclameArsenaal) – have joined forces to provide a representative picture of the main political, cultural and historical posters in the Netherlands from 1870 to the present."

The Códice Calixtino a literary jewel from the 12th century which disappeared a year ago from the Santiago Cathedral was found at 2,40pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The National Police had earlier detained an ex-worker at Santiago Cathedral, Manuel Fernández Castañeiras, as the alleged thief of the Códice Calixtino, which disappeared a year ago from the cathedral. The Códice has been safeguarded in a safe in the Cathedral archive for the past 800 years, and is considered to be the first guide for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.

The Códice was found in a rubbish bag in the garage of Manuel’s home, in a cardboard box. Witnesses report that the police also found four books from the cathedral and a silver tray.

The al Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters who have used pick-axes, shovels and hammers to shatter earthen tombs and shrines of local saints in Mali's fabled desert city of Timbuktu say they are defending the purity of their faith against idol worship.

But historians say their campaign of destruction in the UNESCO-listed city is pulverising part of the history of Islam in Africa, which includes a centuries-old message of tolerance.
