"Soon after Pope Leo XIII admitted scholars into the Vatican Secret Archive, Konrad Schottmüller edited the three parchments of papal proceedings at Poitiers (the mundum of June–July 1308), and the ones held in Cyprus, England and south Italy. Nearly 20 years later, in 1906, Heinrich Finke completed the work, editing some trial fragments scattered in various series, and recently, Anne Gilmour-Bryson edited the big roll which contains the trial in the Papal State and Abruzzi., 107 It is not surprising that they did not say a word about the Chinon parchment, for it was quite unrecognisable. Between the 14th and 17th centuries, the papal archive suffered a great deal of damage, especially during the return journey from Avignon after the conclusion of the Great Schism (1415). In about 1628, the Keeper of Castel Sant’Angelo, Giambattista Confalonieri, put together all the older parchments into some large cabinets:, 108 his handwritten inventory remains essential and it was the one that Schottmüller and Finke used for their investigations into the Vatican Archive., 109 In 1909, the Archivist Cardinal Melampo ordered a census of all documents in the series Archivum Arcis: his aim was to set up a modern inventory with complete descriptions of the writing, seals and others striking elements. The Archival Writer, Vincenzo Nardoni, worked for three years making a careful description of the materials; as a result, he created an excellent tool for scholars which correctly points out that the inquesta in diocesi Turonensi had been held in castro de Caynono. Thus, neither Schottmüller nor Finke could have ever seen it, for Nardoni only finished his work in 1912"
