"The Alaska Division of Libraries, Archives & Museums has named Dean Dawson of Juneau as Alaska State archivist.

Dawson, a 26-year state employee, began his new position July 1. He previously served as the acting state archivist for 8 months.

Dawson was the first responder to the flood at the State Archive on Willoughby Avenue in 2009, and was credited with the successful damage control effort which resulted in no loss of records.

He recently authored electronic-records regulations for the state and served on the interdisciplinary Electronic Practices Committee, which developed an enterprise-wide e-mail policy.

"The State Archives is moving full-on into the digital age and plans to provide greater access to its permanent content via the web," Dawson said. "Today's researcher, from the scholar in New York to the genealogist in France, expects relevant information rapidly. The Archives' mandate is to preserve non-current public records of enduring value and make them available for research in a manner that this and future generations demand."

Dawson holds a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. "
